  WANG LABORATORIES IN TEWKSBURG, MASSACHUSETTS WAS FOUNDED IN 1951 BY DR. AN WANG.

FROM THE MID SIXTIES ON, WANG BUILT SOME SERIES OF ELECTRONIC CALCULATORS FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS. MOST OF THEM WERE PROGRAMMABLE AND ALREADY CLOSER TO A COMPUTER THAN TO A CALCULATING MACHINE. WITH THE WANG 4000, WANG RELEASED A SOLID STATE COMPUTING SYSTEM WITH CORE MEMORY IN 1967.

EVEN IF HE HAD SUCCESS WITH THESE CALCULATORS, WANG DECIDED, THAT THE FUTURE WOULD BE MORE IN PERSONAL COMPUTERS, AND SO HE LOOKED FOR NEW TASKS FOR HIS ELECTRONIC BRAINS. IN 1970 WANG SOLD THE WANG 3300 - A MINICOMPUTER, WHICH WAS PROGRAMMABLE IN BASIC.

WANG FINALLY FOUND ANOTHER JOB, WHAT COMPUTERS COULD DO, AND WANG OFFERED A WORD PROCESSING MACHINE IN 1971 - TEH WANG 1200.

SOON AFTER THAT, WANG RELEASED MORE AND MORE MULTI PURPOSE COMPUTERS, PROGRAMMABLE IN BASIC WITH KEYBOARD AND CRT DISPLAY AND THE WANG 2200 SERIES WAS BORN. THIS SERIES GOT LOT OF CHANGES ON ITS WAY AND LEAD FROM A TTL BASED PERSONAL MULTI PURPOSE COMPUTER FINALLY TO A MULTI USER 2200 SERVER, TO THE OIS AND TO THE WANG VS SERIES.

THE WANG VS SERIES (VS MEANT VIRTUAL SYSTEM OR VIRTUAL STORAGE) WAS THE ANSWER OF WANG TO THE DEC VAX SERIES AND BECAME A BIG SUCCESS FOR WANG AND ITS REPUTATION ON THE SERVER MARKET.

DESPITE OF THAT SUCCESS, WANG ALSO RELEASED A SERIES OF PERSONAL COMPUTERS, WHICH SHOULD COMPETE WITH THE IBM PCS. THE FIRST OF THEM WERE EVEN BETTER THAN THOSE (BETTER CPU, REAL 16 BIT...), BUT THEREFORE NOT 100% COMPATIBLE. BY THE END OF THE 80S THE WANG PC BECAME MORE AND MORE COMPATIBLE, BUT COULD NEVER REALLY LEAD TO A SUCCESS FOR WANG.

IN 1990 DR. AM WANG DIED. BECAUSE OF THE PC FAILURE AND SOME MANAGEMENT PROBLEMS, WANG STARTS TO GET IN SERIOUS TROUBLE IN 1993. JUST THE VS LINE KEPT WANG ALIVE. AFTER SOME RE-ORGANIZATION WANG WAS RENAMED IN WANG GLOBAL AND WAS SOLD IN 1999 TO THE DUTCH COMPANY GETRONICS, AND BECAME THAT WAY GETRONICS NORTH AMERICA.
