  THE STORY OF THIS GIANT COMPUTER CONGLOMERATE IS NOT EASILY TOLD.

SOME OF THE ROOTS LAY BACK IN THE COMPANIES REMINGTON TYPEWRITER COMPANY (WHICH WAS A SOLD OUT PART OF REMINGTON ARMS INC.), THE RAND KARDEX COMPANY (A MERGER OF AMERICAN CARDEX AND THE RAND LEDGER CORPORATION), THE LIBRARY BUREAU AND THE POWERS ACCOUNTING COMPANY, WHICH ALL MERGED TO REMINGTON RAND IN 1927 LED BY JAMES RAND JR. UNTIL 1958.

IN 1950 REMINGTON RAND BOUGHT THE ECKERT MAUCHLY COMPUTER COROPORATION (EMCC - FOUNDED BY J. PRESPER ECKERT AND JOHN MAUCHLY), WHICH WERE THE BUILDER OF THE ENIAC (ELECTRONIC NUMERICAL INTEGRATOR AND COMPUTER) AND THE BINAC (BINARY AUTOMATIC COMPUTER).

IN 1952 REMINGTON RAND BOUGHT THE ENGINEERING RESEARCH ASSOCIATES (ERA), WHICH BECAME THE COMPUTER DIVISION FOR MILITARY COMPUTERS, WHILE EMCC DEVELOPED COMPUTERS FOR THE CIVIL SECTOR.

IN 1955 THE SPERRY CORPORATION, WHICH WAS FOUNDED IN 1910 AS THE SPERRY GYROSCOPE COMPANY BY ELMER AMBROSE SPERRY, ACQUIRED REMINGTON RAND AND RENAMED ITSELF TO SPERRY RAND.
