KEN OLSEN AND HARLAN ANDERSON FOUNDED DIGITAL EQUIPMENT CORPORATION IN 1957. THE FIRST PRODUCTS WERE LOGIC AND LABORATORY MODULES.
THEY DISCOVERED, THAT THERE WAS THE NEED FOR SMALLER COMPUETR SYSTEMS, WHICH GIVE THE USERS DIRECT ACCESS TO THE MACHINES, INSTEAD OF OPERATOR DRIVEN MAINFRAMES.
IN 1959 DEC'S FIRST COMPUTER, THE PDP-1 WAS DESIGNED BY BEN GURLEY. PDP MEANS PROGRAMMABLE DATA PROCESSOR. BY THIS TIME GURLEY AVOIDED THE TERM COMPUTER...
AS A SPECIAL CONSTRUCTION DESIGN, DEC INTRODUCED THE SO CALLED FLIP CHIP MODULES FOR USE IN THEIR PDPS IN 1964.
WITH THE PDP-8 AND PDP-9, INTEGRATED CIRCUITS WERE USED FOR THE COMPUTER MODULES.
THE LINC (LABORATORY INSTRUMENT COMPUTER - INTRODUCED IN 1962) AND THE RELATED PDP-5 (1963) - BOTH 12 BIT MACHINES - WERE THE FIRST SO CALLED MINI COMPUETRS, BECAUSE THE WERE SMALL, INEXPENSIVE AND SO COULD BE USED FOR ONE SPECIFIC TASK.
WITH THE PDP-8, WHICH WAS INTRODUCED IN 1965, DEC LEAD THIS IDEA TO ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL COMPUTERS OF THAT TIME.
IN 1964 DEC STARTED WITH THE 36 BIT PDP-6 THEIR MAINFRAME SEGMENT, WHICH WAS FLOLLWED BY THE SUCCESSFUL PDP-10 IN 1968 AND LATER BY THE DECSYSTEM LINE.
ONE OF THE BEST KNOWN COMPUTER SERIES OF DEC WAS INTRODUCED IN 1970: THE 16 BIT PDP-11. WITH ITS UNIVERSAL UNIBUS, CONNECTING ANY HARDWARE BECAME VERY EASY, AND SO MANY DIFFERENT HARDWARE WAS PRODUCED ALSO BY THIRD PARTY MANUFACTURERS, WHICH ALSO LEAD TO THE BIG SUCCESS OF THESE MACHINES AND LET LAST THIS SERIES FOR SO LONG.
TWELVE YEARS LATER IN 1976, DEC EXTENDED THE PDP-11 TO A COMPUTER WITH 32 BIT AND THE ABILITY TO ACCESS AS MANY MEMORY AS NEEDED. IT WAS THE VAX SERIES (VAX = VIRTUAL ADDRESS EXTENSION), WHICH THEN WAS CALLED "SUPERMINICOMPUTER&quoz;... IF NOT THE PDP-11 COMPUTERS MADE THIS COMPANY RELATED TO MULTI USER COMPUTERS AND UNIX OPERATING SYSTEM, AT LEAST THE VAXES DID
ALTHOUGH KEN OLSEN, DIDN'T BELEIVE, THAT PERSONAL COMPUTERS WOULD HAVE ANY USE, HE HAD TO ACCESPT, THAT OTHER COMPANIES DID HAVE SUCCESS WITH THIS CONCEPT. SO DEC PRODUCED SEVERAl PERSONAL COMPUTER LINES IN THE 80S WITH DIFFERENT ARCHITECTURES, PROCESSORS AND OPERATION SYSTEMS.
SO DEC BECAME AT THE END OF THE 80S THE SECOND LARGEST COMUTER COMPANIES WORLDWIDE. DEC CONTINUED THEIR HIGH PERFORMANCE SERVER SERIES WITH THE ALPHA ARCHITECTURE, BUT MISSING FAST WORKSTATIONS AND PERSONAL COMPUTRRS AND OTHER CHANGES IN THE MARKET AS WELL AS HIGH INVESTMENTS IN SOFTWARE PROJECTS BROGHT DEC INTO FINANCIAL TROBLE IN THE ERALY 90S. PARTS OF THE COMPANY WERE SOLD WITHIN THE NEXT YEARS (DATABSE SECTION TO ORACLE, PROCESSOR SECTION TO INTEL), UNTIL THE COMPANY ITSELF WAS SOLD TO COMPAQ IN 1998.
